The film “Dune” has been a huge hit in recent years - would you like to explore the dunes too? Why not visit the Red Sand of Saudi Arabia?

It takes you around an hour to drive a 4-wheel drive (4WD) from the centre of Riyadh to the famous Red Sand in the southwest. The Red Sand is a good weekend spot highly favoured by locals, Filipino domestic workers, and even foreign business visitors. 

The Red Sand is full of rugged red dunes which constantly change. You may find eagles flying around, or resting in the dunes. Looking into the distance, you can even see the breathtaking escarpment, Jabal Tuwaiq. 

A wide range of activities are available in the Red Sand. You can rent a four-wheeled motorcycle and enjoy a thrilling ride amidst the sand. You can also spend a relaxing afternoon with your children, watching them leaving handprints and footprints on the dunes. When the night falls, you can even lie on the dunes and admire the starry sky. 

Here is a kind reminder: as it gets exceptionally hot in summer, you are recommended to visit the Red Sand in other seasons. Also, given the absence of stores in the Red Sand, remember to bring enough water and snacks with you even if you go there in winter.
