Two classic Cantonese Operas, The Legend of Purple Hairpin from the civil category and Thunderous Battle Drums from the martial category, will be performed in their original full-length version on two evenings respectively. The cast of ‘six pillars’ will feature both veteran and young actors, aims to present the new generation of local Cantonese Opera talents and demonstrate the successful passing of the baton from the older to the younger generation of Hong Kong Cantonese Opera.

Mulan is a dance drama based on the beloved story of family devotion, loyalty and love elaborated in the ancient Ballad of Mulan.  The plot centres around the heroic endeavour of a young woman who disguises herself as a man to take her father's place in the army.  She embarks on a journey of self-discovery that takes her into the battle fields, yet through which she ultimately finds love, peace and freedom. This modern interpretation reimagines the classic tale of the legendary female Chinese warrior Hua Mulan through remarkable and compelling dance numbers and exquisite stage technology.

With a history of 600 years, Kunqu Opera is full of aesthetic value that was listed in the first “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” by UNESCO in 2001. The Palace of Eternal Life is one of the two dramatic gems of the Qing dynasty, and a Kunqu classic of the highest literary, musical and dramatic calibre. This version is centred on the tragic love story of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and Imperial Concubine Yang. Wei Chunrong and Wang Zhenyi, both renowned Plum Blossom Award winners, will perform together at the peak of their careers.
