It takes you around an hour to drive a 4-wheel drive (4WD) from the centre of Riyadh to the famous Red Sand in the southwest.

On 13th January 1902, Abdul-Aziz from the House of Saud led his army to recapture Riyadh by conquering the Masmak Fort overnight. The recapture became a crucial starting point for Ibn Saud in unifying Najd, Hejaz and “The Holy City of Mecca”, finally the whole Saudi Arabia.

Riyadh, meaning “garden” in Arabic, is where the House of Saud emerged. It has later become the capital of the kingdom, witnessing Saudi Arabia’s contemporary development.
