Medieval Castle: Kaunas Castle

Kaunas, a key transport town on the way to Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, possesses strategic importance. The Kaunas Castle was erected to protect the city and the capital from foreign invasions.

Built during the mid-14th century, the Kaunas Castle is a medieval castle in the second-largest city in Lithuania. Its red wall and the Gothic architectural style echoes with that of the Vilnius Castle Complex and the Trakai Island Castle. They are all strongholds with the same military significance. The once spectacular castle only has one-third standing that remains today, yet it is enough to offer us a glimpse of its glorious past. The round tower and bastion are the castle’s most essential defensive structures and remarkable parts. A branch of the Kaunas City Museum was established in the castle to introduce the history of the city, and host occasional festivals that welcome public participation. Near the museum stands the statue of “Freedom Warrior” reaching almost seven metres tall. It is a nice place to take pictures.
