Haapsalu Castle

A seaside resort can be full of history. Haapsalu, a town next to the Baltic Sea, has magnificent castles. It is where castles and a seaside resort can perfectly blend into one.

Taking a stroll from the beach, you may walk through traditional cottages to find a castle which is as splendid as those in Western Europe. Built in the 13th century, the grey and lively Haapsalu Castle consists of a green courtyard and many cultural heritages behind the spires and thick walls. The local children playing in the courtyard bring zest to the solemn old castle, also reflecting the simplicity of this traditional seaside resort. The castle guards the town day and night so that every child can grow up safely.

One of the most striking features of Haapsalu Castle is its 29-meter watchtower, which dates back to the 13th century and was later repurposed as a bell tower. The castle's walls were raised to 15 meters and additional fortifications, such as trenches and blindages, were added during the Livonian War in the 16th century.
