In addition to pastel de nata, crab porridge and pork chop buns, Macao is also renowned for its Portuguese cuisine. The Portuguese cuisine in Macao is a blend of Chinese and Portuguese cuisines with other culinary influences. It is known as Macanese cuisine.
Macanese cuisine was created by Portuguese local in Macao. Many of them had lived in Malaysia and the Portuguese colonies in Africa. Therefore, they combined the African and Malaysian culinary skills with the local Chinese ingredients in Macao. This is how the unique Macanese cuisine was first created.
Macanese and Macanese Patois, a Portuguese-based creole language used by the Macanese community, have created the unique culture of Macao. If you like to have a try of the authentic Macanese cuisine, you can go to Cunha Street in the centre of Taipa. In Portuguese restaurants like the Restaurante Dumbo and Antonio Restaurant, you can have a feast of Macao – Portuguese chicken, African chicken, pastéis de Bacalhau and roast pork. After the feast, you may further indulge your taste buds on the street food and snacks with a full stomach!
