On the port of Alexandria, a prominent harbour of Egypt, there used to stand a towering lighthouse - the Lighthouse of Alexandria. Merchant ships worldwide were attracted to dock and trade here in Alexandria, the city which was on par with the then New York and Shanghai. The lighthouse was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Unfortunately, the lighthouse was severely damaged by three earthquakes. In order to resist foreign invasions, remnant stones of the lighthouse were used to build the Citadel of Qaitbay on the site, which added to the fortress historical values. The fortress guarding the vital port of Alexandria is one of the most important defensive strongholds not only in Egypt, but along the Mediterranean Sea coast. After admiring the crystal blue water at the harbour, you may walk into this magnificent Citadel of Qaitbay and wander in the hallway. When you touch on the stones, it seems that you can hear the lighthouse telling about the hustle and bustle of Alexandria in its heyday.
