Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum

The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, the burying ground of Sun Yat-sen, is located in Zhongshan Mountain Scenic Area in the eastern outskirts of Nanjing, adjacent to Linggu Temple in the east and Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum in the west. The whole complex is built on the hillside astride a south-north central axis. The whole mausoleum is shaped like a bell, and is known as “the grandest mausoleum in the history of modern Chinese architecture.”
On the square at the mausoleum entrance stands a tall granite archway, which bears two gilded characters “Bo Ai”, meaning “universal love”, handwritten by Sun Yat-sen. The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum covers an area of more than 80,000 square meters. The main buildings such as the archway, the tomb passage, the mausoleum gate, the stone steps, the tablet pavilion, the sacrificial hall, and the coffin chamber are arranged along the central axis, fully reflecting the traditional Chinese architectural style.
