Do you know what the symbol of Vilnius and Lithuania is? It is the Gediminas' Tower standing on the hill. On every 1 January, the Lithuanian tricolour flag is hoisted on the tower to commemorate Flag Day. It is a part of the Upper Castle in the Vilnius Castle Complex, which has been witnessing the ups and downs in history since the 10th century.

The Vilnius Castle Complex, incorporated three castles, was one of the most significant defensive structures of this Baltic state. The history of the castle complex, however, was a turbulent one. Part of the complex was burnt down by the Teutonic Knights, followed by several attacks in the 14th century. During the 1655 Battle of Vilnius, the complex was captured and it was severely damaged later, thus losing its strategic importance. Today, the Gediminas' Tower is still standing as a loyal guard of the city. The tower houses a museum, which is home to a collection of archaeological findings from the hill and the surrounding areas. It is also a fantastic spot to enjoy the city view from the top. There are a few other surviving buildings at the castle complex serving as the office of the National Museum of Lithuanian, and housing the Museum of Applied Art, which is worth visiting. The Gediminas Hill Lift that came into service in 2003 makes our way up the hill much easier. There you can embrace the stunning sunset view, and feel quietly by the tower the heyday of the castle complex.
